How to Become a Substitute Teacher

Substitute teaching can be a very rewarding job, if you are willing to put in the hard work and dedication needed to acquire the skills it takes to teach effectively. Substitute teachers have flexible hours and enjoy working with a diverse selection of students. The Franklin County School System has secured an online training course that will enable you to work from your own site to obtain the skills for classroom and behavioral management. 


 

Steps to becoming a substitute teacher (Applicant with a High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma)

  1. Complete the Basic Option A SubSkills Online Training Course (cost to applicant of approx. $39.95) with a satisfactory score of no less than 70%.
  2. Have an administrator of any Franklin County School recommend, in writing to the Director of Schools, you be employed as a substitute.
  3. Someone from HR will contact the applicant upon the approval from the Director of Schools, to complete all paperwork with the Human Resource Department, present certificate of course completion with passing score, and submit to the required criminal history background check. 

 

Steps to becoming a substitute teacher (Applicant with an Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree) 

  1. Have an administrator of any Franklin County School recommend, in writing to Director of Schools, you be employed as a substitute.
  2. Someone from HR will contact the applicant, upon the approval from the Director of Schools, to complete all paperwork with the Human Resource Department, present an official transcript showing the appropriate degree awarded, and submit to the required criminal history background check. 

 

Tennessee Licensed Teachers (Active and Retired)

Applicant's holding a valid Tennessee Teaching License may contact the Franklin County Schools Human Resource Department to request to be added to the sub list. HR will make a recommendation to the Director of Schools to employ the applicant as a substitute teacher. Upon approval from the Director of Schools, someone from HR will contact the applicant to schedule an appointment to complete paperwork and subsequent criminal history background check. 

 

Licensed Out of State Teachers (Active and Retired)

Licensed Out of State Teachers should follow the same procedures above for applicants with a Bachelor's degree. 

 

Substitute Teacher Application-all approved applicants should bring a completed substitute application with them to their scheduled appointment at the Human Resource Department. 

 

Franklin County Substitute Handbook-all new substitutes are responsible for reading the substitute handbook and the contents thereof.
